The Church’s Accountability for Suicide Omission
Season 2, Episode 17
When a person dies by suicide, should the Church begin by judging the dead—or by examining the living? This episode presents the central argument of Through My Fault: Suicide, Ecclesial Omission, and the Temporal Mission of the Church Militant. Drawing from Scripture, the Catechism of the Catholic Church, canon law, Vatican II, the Confiteor, and the Gospel account of Judas, it argues that every suicide constitutes prima facie evidence requiring ecclesial examination. This does not mean every death was preventable, that the Church caused it, or that responsibility is equal. It means the Church must ask whether Christ’s non-abandonment was made historically receivable through her members, offices, and institutions. The dead are entrusted to God’s mercy; the living are called to prayer, care, repentance, learning, and reform—beginning with the words: “through my fault.”
