Pure nondemanding fun

Sometimes you don't want a complicated, brain-taxing mystery, just something pleasant and cozy to help pass a few spare minutes in an entertaining way. This collection does just that. The stories' protagonists are a far cry from being the world's greatest detectives (or, for that matter, even very competent ones)--but who cares? There is a problem/situation to momentarily pique our interest, and it gets resolved without too much fanfare in a way that briefly diverts us from the cares of the world. There is a need for such simple, escapist pleasures. Rating such a book is problematic. It is not "great" literature by any means, but it seems never to have had such high aspirations. Rather, it aimed comfortably lower (much lower, some might say), but in that niche it succeeds. I was initially reluctant to purchase this collection, especially after reading some of the reviews of the separately published, individual titles (and the criticisms are not without merit), but I'm glad I overcame my reluctance. This set has provided me much enjoyment.

Cosy Collection

Having read and enjoyed all the separate stories on Kindle, I was delighted to find this paperback version containing all the cosy mysteries surrounding Laura and Rupert Latimer based around the perfectly imagined English country village of Claresby.

This is a great collection at an attractive price - a must for all fans of author Daphne Coleridge's very British mysteries. It contains all the delightful stories from the Kindle books: 'The Claresby Mystery', 'Three Mysteries', 'Two Claresby Village Mysteries, 'Rupert Investigates', The Claresby Ghost and Two Other Mysteries.

The Twelve stories included in the book are: The Treasure of Claresby Manor, Pickled Toad With Diamonds, An Uninvited Guest, The Claresby Mystery, The Black Widow of Claresby, The Claresby Ghost, Death of a Clarinettist, The Floods Murder, Rupert Investigates: A Cambridge Mystery, The Coach House Mystery, The Curious Legacy, and The Twelve Days of Christmas Mystery.

Warmly told, these stories all kept me guessing until the end. What I also like about this collection is the way in which Laura and Rupert's relationship is developed through each story. My particular personal favourites are The Treasure of Claresby Manor and The Curious Legacy. I hope you enjoy these stories as much as I did.

A curious manifestation

Probably the most difficult genre right now is to maintain the mystery aspect of the traditonial mystery because modern communication systems have rendered most of the conventions irrelevant. Thus, this series of mysteries that may or may not be mysteries, set in a fictional (very fictional) village in the U.K. somehow spans the 19th and 20 century conventions with 21st century trappings (the husband of the female village squire is a Kindle crossword creator). I don't think the problems of the genre are solved, but it is a valiant attempt to do so.
