WHERE IT’S QUIET

The Clearing: Leaning Into Presence

I have a practice. When I need to find my way back to myself, I sit somewhere and write — not about my feelings, but into them. What I see. What I smell. What's moving through my chest in that exact moment. Presence on the page. It's one of the most honest things I know how to do.

This episode was written in a corner booth at a restaurant called Le Manchu in Chamonix, France. Mountains out every window. A glass of red wine. A pen. And me, finally sitting still long enough to feel what I had been quietly avoiding for months.

I read you what I wrote that day, exactly as it came out. The details of that room. The people in it. What the food tasted like and what the music did to me. And somewhere inside all of that specificity, the truth I'd been circling arrived on its own — the way it always does when you write your way into a moment instead of around it.

I went to the Alps to be done. What the writing showed me was that done isn't really how this works. You don't graduate from the hard things. You get present with them. You feel them. And slowly, you grow around them.

This episode is about that practice, and what it gave me that day.
