She climbed the highest peak in more than seventy countries by then. She led forty-four all-female mountaineering expeditions around the world. Somewhere in the sky above us, an asteroid bears the number she was assigned when astronomers named it in her honor. Pluto, the farthest thing we can reach from where she was born in that small printing family in northern Japan, a mountain range carries her name.
