This wide-ranging and freewheeling discussion touches on the dramatic changes in the way music is consumed that have occurred over the course of their lives (from 8 tracks and AM radio to LPs and cassettes to CDs to the digital present) and features mention of a huge number of artists, songs, and albums, including Don McLean’s “American Pie,” Vicki Lawrence’s “The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia,”  the Star Wars soundtrack, Linda Rondstadt’s “When Will I Be Loved,” San Francisco punk, Grateful Dead bootlegs, Echo and The Bunnymen’s “Thorn of Crowns,” a ton of Beastie Boys and Wilco shout outs, The Pogues, Lyle Lovett, Television’s “Marquee Moon,” The Fall, Uncle Tupelo, remaindered CCR tapes destroyed by Matt at his warehouse job at Fantasy Records, Bill Evans’ “Jade Visions,” The Old 97s, Pavement, The Pixies, The Drive by Truckers’ Southern Rock Opera, Flogging Molly’s Drunken Lullabies, Bach’s Goldberg Variations, The National’s The Boxer, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, kids’ music, Kanye’s Yeezus, Peach Kelli Pop, and Waxahatchee’s Cerulean Salt. Among the highlights are Robert’s reminiscence of being broken up with via a mix tape and Matt’s of his once using an inheritance to start his own record company, Hanging Johnny, to distribute the music of a friend’s band!
