When the nominees for the 81st Academy Awards were announced, there was an immediate uproar surrounding The Dark Knight’s failure to secure a Best Picture nomination.  After that initial uproar and the subsequent poorly rated Oscars’ telecast, the Academy revamped the rules to include up to 10 Best Picture nominees in the hopes of including more audience friendly box office hits, à la The Dark Knight.  But was the main issue The Dark Knight not being nominated, or was that merely the tip of a much bigger iceberg?  In The Cold Open Mini #19, The Top 5 Films NOT Nominated for Best Picture in 2009, Kathryn Frank and Robert Sickels revisit that year in movies to come up with their alternative slates. In considering their crossover free lists, one thing becomes clear: no matter how you look at it, 2008 (the film year the 2009 Oscars honored) was a SPECTACULAR year in movies!
