About Sonja:

Sonja Montiel founded College Confidence in 2002 with the philosophy that college planning must be driven by teens through reflection, transparency, and accountability, which can only be done with parents/caregivers who are intentionally supportive. She has helped thousands of teens and their families from the United States, Canada, New Zealand, and China through their college planning experience where emotional and physical health are the priority. Currently, she is on a mission to change the state of our current college-bound culture where families can move away from the fixed-minded notion that their identities are dependent on “getting in”…not any more.

Sonja has more than twenty-one years in college admissions, having extensive experience in freshman, transfer, and international admissions. After earning her master’s degree in education, she worked as an admissions officer for a large public university, followed by becoming a director of college counseling at a private preparatory school in California where nearly 100 percent of students attended four-year universities worldwide. She has served on multiple committees and boards for high schools, professional associations and non-profit organizations that focus on improving the college admission process in the United States that protects the integrity and dignity of families. She has shared her expertise in regional and national publications as well as numerous interviews.

She is married to her high school sweetheart and enjoying the adventure of raising their two daughters, who are now 20 and 11 years old. If you run into her, be prepared for the invitation to join the family for flamenco lessons and karaoke nights on Saturday nights!
