The King eats first.
Many people in business will tell you that you need to eat first.
When I was starting out as a commissioned salesperson, I would take my commissions and not worry about the company.
When I was self-employed, I had to change that.
When I set up my company, the company became the King.
The King eats first.
Next, comes me.
Then, the employees.
The reason?
The King is the holder of the coffers.
The King prepares the kingdom to survive after a long period of abundance.
When times get tough, the King has to have the resources to operate the kingdom.
Fat soldiers won't defend a castle, so it's important the King eats first.
Keep this in mind as you're building your company.
When the pandemic hit, I was able to confidently go to to my staff and say, "we're good for 6 months if we don't take another dime in. Your salaries are covered."
That was only possible because I was feeding the coffers of the King for years before I got there.
This allowed us to power through and do what was necessary to survive in the kingdom.
If you're going to be a good steward for the Kingdom, you have to pay the king first.
The king will feed everyone else from there.
Remember, the King eats first.
