Luna returns to the small town of Mercy, Nebraska, on a humid August night in 2019. She meets an old woman named Mrs. Kellogg who claims to have witnessed a confirmation ceremony at Saint Jude's side door — a ceremony that never appeared on any parish record. The woman's testimony is precise, obsessive, and deeply wrong. Luna sits with her on a sagging porch, listening to a story about a child who was not a child, a priest who was not a priest, and a door that should not have been there. No one else from the parish remembers. No one else was there. But the story has splinters that stick in the mind long after.
