Daily Devotion:
"The Contagious Sin of Bitterness"
Hebrews 12:15
English Standard Version
15 See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God; that no “root of bitterness” springs up and causes trouble, and by it many become defiled;
When is the last time you felt a little bitter? The world certainly offers plenty of opportunities to feel that way. Whether it's seeing someone else succeed where you've failed or simply feeling overlooked or unappreciated, there are many times you could allow bitterness to spring up in your soul.
Bitterness is like an aggressive weed that chokes out any other plant in a garden. Nothing good can grow along side a bitter root. Someone who wants to live a life of joy must keep herself far away from bitterness. Paul warned the Ephesians of the dangers when he told them to put bitterness “away from [them]” (Ephesians 4:31ESV).
Ask God to reveal any hidden roots of bitterness within your heart that may be stifling your joy. Put it far away from you so that you and those around you can live more joyfully each and every day.
