Mary Surratt was one of four people hanged by the US Federal Government for conspiring with John Wilkes Booth and others in the assassination plot that led to the murder of Abraham Lincoln. Found guilty, there remains controversy as to her actual guilt and as to whether she deserved her fate at the gallows.
