Re:Engineered

The Correction Worked in the Room. It Never Left the Room.

Listen Later

A junior engineer did everything right on paper. Then he got put in a lead role before anyone had pressure tested him, and a values gap surfaced that no interview could have caught. Chris Stasiuk ran the correction early, specific, and more than once, exactly the way Episode 11 said to. It still didn’t work, and it took almost fifteen years to find out why.

What You Will Take Away

  • Correction fixes a skill gap, not a values gap, because the other person already believes they’re right.
  • Compliance in the room is not commitment outside of it.
  • A hire pre-mortem cannot catch a mismatch that does not exist yet.
  • If a repeated, specific conversation has not moved someone, the next move is structural, not another talking to.
  • Years of silence after a hard call is not proof the standard did not matter.
  • Some standards get tested on a decade-long clock, and reading the early years as the final result is a measurement error.

Who This Is For

  • Engineers who have given the same correction more than once and watched it not stick.
  • Leaders who promoted someone fast, then watched the fast version of them cause friction with a more experienced team.
  • Anyone who stepped back from managing someone and is still waiting to find out if the thing they worried about was ever real.
  • Engineers trying to tell whether a performance problem is actually a values mismatch dressed up as one.
