• The covenant to Abraham – an everlasting covenant
Genesis 17:5-7; Genesis 22:15-18
Hebrews 6:13-19
II Samuel 7:1-17
During the time of Moses, God and the children of Israel entered into a covenant. This is the old covenant (Exodus 24:7-8). This old covenant was specifically for the nation of Israel. Much of what is recorded in the law is symbolic of what would come in the future with the Messiah. It was a shadow, a pattern, a figure of something greater coming in the future (Hebrews 10:1; Colossians 2:17; Hebrews 8:5; 9:23; 9:9).
The covenants made to Abraham and David were everlasting covenants, which have ramifications for our future hope. Until the writings of the Apostle Paul and the revelation of the Mystery, the inclusion of the Gentiles was not understood (Romans 9:4-5; Ephesians 2:11-13; Galatians 3:17-18, 29).
With the coming of the Messiah and his death on the cross, the old covenant was completed. Jesus initiated a new covenant, which replaced the old with better and more enduring promises of eternal inheritance (Hebrews 8:6-13; 9:15).
God remains faithful to His promise. He not only made these everlasting promises, but He made a covenant, and He swore with an oath. He will absolutely bring to pass what He has declared.
