In this episode of Mysteries of UFOs, we revisit the Coyne Helicopter UFO Incident, one of the most credible close encounters in U.S. history. On October 18, 1973, a U.S. Army Reserve helicopter crew flying over Mansfield, Ohio, encountered a cigar-shaped UFO with red and green lights. As the object approached on a collision course, it stopped in midair and emitted a green beam into the helicopter, flooding the cockpit with light.
During this encounter, the Huey helicopter inexplicably began to ascend against the pilot's control inputs, climbing from 2,500 to 3,800 feet. Ground witnesses confirmed seeing the lights and the helicopter at the same time, adding powerful corroboration. Despite investigations, no conventional explanation—meteor, aircraft, or atmospheric effect—accounts for the event.
The Coyne crew remained steadfast in their testimony for decades, and the case stands as one of the most compelling examples of UFOs displaying both technological superiority and direct interaction with human craft.
