Do you ever feel like you have done or expressed all that can be expressed with that idea?
Oh no, I have only just begun.
Do you ever feel blocked when you are looking at a clump of clay or at a blank plate? Do you ever feel like what should I do now?
I have kind of the opposite problem I have to sort through all the things I could be doing. And have to stop and just say. It’s time to do this one, the others will wait. There are too many things I want to do.
How do you cultivate a creative mindset?
Daydreaming is very helpful. I need to be out of the studio and doing something completely different and I get ideas constantly that way.
Do you bring a notebook with you to capture them?
Unfortunately, I don’t. I should. That’s a great idea, Paul.
I’m laughing because I have trouble with that. I get a great idea and forget it 5 minutes later. Does that ever happen to you?
I will tell you a funny thing, I once read about an artist who did big public installations and whenever he was submitting a proposal they needed a sketch and if he got accepted he could do the piece, but he was like me, he would do the piece and then sketch it an then submit the sketch and the piece was already made. So, I am also kind of in reverse. I kind of make stuff and then put it in my notebook so I will have it for later.
You said you like to have time of daydreaming, is that different than brainstorming?
No, it’s basically the same thing for me. I am just constantly working out thoughts and ideas usually when I am working out something inconvenient and not being near a notebook. Maybe I am out on a walk or somewhere completely different and I will be thinking about what I am going to do and hopefully I will remember them when I get back.
How do you manage your time for the studio so it’s used efficiently?
I basically mentally clock in and go to work. So I think of my space as my work space, even though it’s in my house, and that’s another story for another day. But basically I have to separate myself from the rest of the house and just be at the job. I don’t answer the phone or return messages when I am working and save it for a break. And I just pretend I am at some job with a terrible boss.
