The creative process is an adventure overflowed with bouts of adrenaline, periods of slumps, and a series of frustrations. However, the fulfillment from creating something from scratch makes the journey worthwhile. That takes us to these questions: Just what exactly fuels a person to begin creating something? How does the creative process work? And how can we overcome creative blocks when awakening our ideas and expressions? In this episode of Radically Loved at ModPod Studio, long-time friends JD, Rosie, and Torry sit down and chat about their respective creative odyssey. Listen as these three creatives list their different critical moments during the process. They also talk about the motivations and aspirations that kept them going through difficult times. Finally, the creative icons provide insights about overcoming roadblocks in the creative process. To her, writing is one of the most exciting forms of expression. ●To prepare herself, she puts herself into the mindset of “done is better than good" and releases her desire for perfection. ●Writing a book may look easy — it's just adding words and connecting phrases, but the process is much more complex. ●Rosie found it challenging to write cohesively and concisely. The “Aha!” Moment ●Rosie had stored so many thoughts and ideas in her head for a long time. ●Rosie wanted to turn these ideas into something to help, contribute, and make a difference to the world. ●In her pursuit of purpose, she realized that she wanted to create the book she needed. The Rough Road To Getting Published ●Rosie's psychic encouraged her to express her ideas in a book. ●She researched how to pitch herself to publishers. ●Reality hit her when her prospective publishers seemed uninterested with her first draft of a book proposal. ●With the help of a publisher, Rosie created a proper book proposal. Getting Through Roadblocks: Torry’s Side ●Considering that he did not attend design school, Torry shares how his lack of knowledge inspired him to be an artistic designer. ●However, he admits to encountering roadblocks along the way that made him question his worth. ●Torry either powered through these difficulties or just let them be. For the latter, he believes that anyone can reignite their spark. ●Roadblocks can appear in the creative process. ●To keep his interest in Red Monkeys Design from waning, Torry expanded into other fields. Getting Through Roadblocks: JD’s Side ●Like Rosie, JD also wanted to turn his ideas into a book. However, he had a hard time placing his rapid-fire thoughts onto paper. ●As JD struggled typing the words, he thought of a more unconventional way of deciphering his ideas — through audio-recording. ●Rather than insisting on the traditional creative process, focus on finding a way that works for you. ●People tend to look at the process in binary, but you should also consider what lies in the middle. ●JD connects his creative struggles to his more personal grapple. Listen to the full episode to learn how JD relates fatherhood to the creative roadblocks. An Itch To Scratch ●Rosie refers to her book as an “itch to scratch." She would have regretted not creating and publishing her book. ●Now that her book is up on pre-sale, she feels complete and fulfilled. ●Rosie's book is perfect for anyone looking to learn more about themselves and go on a journey. Feeling Radically Loved ●JD has been feeling radically loved in the recent weeks — by himself. Creative, and they dream, and they dream. But some people are creative that inspires the dream, and the dream takes action because you actually move and do it." [29:50] JD Cargill: “Who gets to decide what your creative process is? You.” [30:45] JD Cargill: "To get the creative process going when I feel stumped or lazy or whatever is to distract yourself at first. Once you're distracted by that, you can move one step in the right direction. You will be surprised how it keeps going." [35:16] Torry: “We’re hustlers in a way that if there’s anything that we really want — if you want those new jeans, new shoes — you’ll find a way to make it happen.” [43:43] JD Cargill: “In this time and age when we're all trying to fight doubt, fear, and shame, and guilt, we should look at the opportunities to say, ‘I did that, and I’m going to give myself credit for it, and thank you for the universe for letting that part of my life and now let's go do the next thing.’” About JD JD Cargill is a creative who devotes himself to advancing media content creation.
