John 1:1-9 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world.

The Gospel of John is truly a window into the person of the Word of God. Jesus as the Son of God is given many wonderful pictures to which we can relate to access His divinity. If the four Gospels correspond to the four faces of the living creatures in revelation and Ezekiel, we can see the eagle side of Jesus in John – that which soars above the petty differences and traditions of men and sees a higher perspective of the supernatural.

In the beginning the Word was existing. And the Word was in fellowship with God the Father.

And the word was as to His essence absolute deity. This Word was in the beginning in fellowship with God the Father. All things through His intermediate agency came into being, and without Him there came into being not even one thing that came into existence. In Him life was existing. And this aforementioned life was the light of men. And the light in the darkness is constantly shining. And the darkness did not overwhelm it.

In this introduction of John we are given the first attributes of the Word of God. From this we can build a foundation of Word knowledge and understanding to the point where we have a living relationship with the quick and powerful Word Himself.

1. The Word precedes Existence – it was existing already at the beginning.

If we approach God, we need to believe He exists and that He is a rewarder of those of diligently seek Him. Hebrews 11:6.

2. The Word is in Fellowship with God the Father – His Son. Fellowship goes deeper than a visit between friends, it is a shared purpose like two fellows in a ship going in the same direction no matter what storms they face until they reach their final destination.

3. The Word is God. The Word is to His essence, absolute deity. Jesus did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, or put another way: he knew exactly what he was giving up to take on the form a servant. Apostle Andre equates it with Roger Federer the tennis champion, leaving his professional tour at top form, to come and play with kids to teach them the game!

That is the level of self-renunciation that Jesus undertook in order to relate to us, and it worked! God gave him the name above all names. At that name, every knee must bow and every tongue confess that Jesus is Lord. Philippians 2 is worth further reading in your devotional time.

4. The Word is a Creative Force. It is the intermediate agency through which all things are made. Rom 4:17 (As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were. God calls those things in our lives as though they were. When people take their desires out of context with fellowship in the Word and with the Father, they tend to call the wrong things into being. It becomes a self-centered “name it, claim it and frame it” exercise that needs reforming. Here God was calling Abraham’s family into being. There was something that was now dead, but God called it as if it were young again. There is the life of men, the light that shines and overcomes the darkness. There is the context of our relationship with God that gives the authority to call it as it is written. That means you need a healthy relations
