A harrowing expedition by two railway workers surveying a disused World War II tunnel sealed for decades after an air strike. The narrator, fascinated by wartime history, leads his reluctant partner, Dan, into the tunnel, where they discover the wreck of a supply train. Soon, the narrator encounters a hideous, partially-skinned entity trapped near the wreckage. After fleeing, he is horrified to find that Dan has been mimicked and replaced by a more effective monstrous double. The narrator escapes as sunlight repels the creature and later falsifies his report to ensure the tunnel remains sealed and no one else enters.
