Tommyknockers are mystical, gnome-like creatures in mining folklore, believed to both warn and play tricks on miners underground. They are about two feet tall and are often described as looking like greenish-colored men wearing a traditional miner’s outfit. Living beneath the ground, they have been reported to have committed both good and bad deeds through the centuries, often playing practical jokes and committing random acts of mischief, such as stealing unattended tools and food.

The Tommyknockers were first heard of in the United States when Cornish miners worked in the western Pennsylvania coal mines in the 1820s. When the California Gold Rush began, mine owners welcomed these experienced Cornish miners and often sought them out. Their knocking is interpreted by most as a warning that a tunnel is about to collapse, while some believe their hammering is to make the tunnels collapse. Belief in the knockers in America remains through today. When one large mine closed in 1956 and the owners sealed the entrance, generations of miners circulated a petition calling on the mine owners to set the knockers free so that they could move on to other mines. The owners complied.

What exactly are the Tommyknockers and do they really exist in the dark underground mines and tunnels across America? Are they mountain spirits, goblins, or something else? The Lake Worth Monster is a legendary creature said to inhabit Lake Worth at the Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge, just outside Fort Worth, Texas. The creature is often described as a "part-man, part-goat" with scales and long clawed fingers. In July of 1969, newspapers reported alleged sightings by locals, including one in which the monster landed on a man's car after jumping out of a tree, and another in which it threw an automobile tire at a group of people. Newspapers also published a photograph purportedly taken of the creature, and locals began driving out to the lake at night to get a look at it. Local police investigated the claims but found no evidence of the monster in the Lake Worth and Greer Island area. Over 70 eyewitnesses saw the strange beast, and most believed it was a real creature, while others decided it was a silly prank by school kids, since sightings dropped in September of that same year.

The Great Dismal Swamp stretches across Northeastern North Carolina up into Southern Virginia and is one of the largest natural areas in the Eastern United States, with over 100,000 acres protected by state and federal preserves. This area has a long history of human settlement and exploitation, being home to Native American bands for over 13,000 years before the Europeans took an interest in the land.

“The Dismal” swamp lives up to its name, with deep, murky and dangerous waters covered by a canopy of cedar trees and Spanish moss. Within the shadows of the swamp lurks a creature that is known as an apex predator, standing no less than 7’-9-feet tall, draped in a coat of thick, yellow-colored fur, mud and swamp debris, and eyes that reflect a red or yellow glow.

In 1902, the Dismal Swamp Monster was said to have killed seven dogs, eaten two of them, and attacked the dog’s owner as well. The creature was reportedly unfazed by gunfire, with six of the witness's dogs fleeing in terror at the sight of it. The monster was later spotted at the home in the area, appearing at a well, causing panic among the locals.

The legend and sightings of this creature are still reported to this day, but what exactly is the Dismal Swamp Monster? Jessica was tasked with this creature as a coordinate remote viewing target and discusses the data here.
