Theme: The Danger of Bitterness

Read: Ephesians 4:31-32; Deuteronomy 29:1-6;

Hebrews 12:15-17

“...Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behaviour. Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you…”

(Ephesians 4:31-32)

Bitterness is a deep hostility or resentment that poisons the inner person. It leads to wrath, causing outward explosions of feelings, often over trivial matters, disrupting homes, churches, and friendships. When bitterness resides in the heart, it causes us to treat others the way Satan treats them, instead of the way God has treated us.

Paul understood the danger of bitterness, so he warns us that no bitter root should grow in us (Hebrews 12:15). In Ephesians, he provides three reasons why we must avoid it;

First, it grieves the Spirit. (v. 30) He dwells within the Christian, and if the heart is filled with bitterness, the Spirit is saddened. The Holy Spirit is most pleased in an atmosphere of love, joy, and peace, because these are the "fruit of the Spirit."

Second, it grieves God the Son, who died for us. Christ paid a huge price so that you and I can be free, and Paul says we should imitate him.

Third, it grieves God the Father, who forgave us when we trusted Christ. When God sees hearts filled with bitterness and rage, he grieves and regrets.

Paul offers three recommendations: _1) be kind, 2) be compassionate, 3) be forgiving._ Jesus said, “If you have a grudge with a brother, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift.” (Matthew 23-24)

As you pray, ask God to forgive us for grieving Him by harboring bitterness in our hearts. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
