Air Crash Chronicles

The Deadliest Mid-Air Collision in History

Listen Later

The 1996 Charkhi Dadri mid-air collision stands as the deadliest accident of its kind in aviation history, when two large passenger aircraft collided in the skies over northern India, killing all 349 people on board.
The disaster occurred when one aircraft descended below its assigned altitude, placing it directly in the path of another jet cruising in the opposite direction. Communication breakdowns within the cockpit, compounded by limited English proficiency, played a critical role in the fatal mistake. At the same time, outdated radar systems on the ground prevented air traffic controllers from accurately monitoring the aircrafts’ vertical positions, leaving little chance to intervene.
The tragedy exposed multiple weaknesses across both human and technological systems. In response, sweeping global reforms were introduced, including the mandatory installation of collision avoidance systems and improved radar capabilities. Airspace structures were also redesigned to better separate traffic flows, reducing the risk of similar incidents.
Today, the lessons learned from this catastrophe continue to shape modern aviation safety, ensuring that such a devastating collision is far less likely to occur again.
