Publisher's Summary:
What if hospitals and doctors could quietly bury their mistakes? This fascinating, best-selling novel tells you why they can't.
Three young men from different backgrounds have graduated from medical schools and have become surgical fellows at a leading teaching hospital in Boston. They learn to become surgeons, to communicate with patients and families, and to be observed and appraised by their peers and professors on daily rounds. And each month - sometimes with dry mouth and rapid pulse - each attends the meeting of the Mortality Conference, known to all as the Death Committee, which examines every patient loss for possible human error, in order to prevent it from happening again. How the Death Committee affects and is affected by the lives, loves, and ambitions of three new doctors is the theme of this intriguing and profoundly moving novel.

Doctors and dealing with lack of success
I have read happily all of Noah Gordon's books. My first encounter with his written work was when I was at college, almost five decades ago; I was a student and had the opportunity to read "The Rabbi" and follow the career and personal life of a man who enters this profession. Probably, Gordon's best known work is his trilogy about medicine as practiced a thousand years ago, then 175 years ago, and then 25 years ago. And, of course, his interesting and well developed characters serving in such professions are a hallmark of his writing. Using hospital mortality clinics is a great device to see "doctors" at various developmental stages dealing with their knowledge limitations and their emotions. The pace of the book was just right for the topic at hand. It reinforced my standing rule that recent medical school graduates and interns don't have sufficient experience to be trusted by me when treating my family. Good read.
Another home run for Noah Gordon
I have enjoyed every Noah Gordon book. This was no exception. I loved all the people in the book and getting to know them, and I was sorry when it ended. It could be a series book. If buy this book you will be very happy with it. Noah writes so everyone can read and understand what they are reading and the connections are all there.
Disappointing
Having read the Cole trilogy, I was expecting this novel to mesmerize in a way that transfixed and made me really enjoy the characters. This book seemed hastily written, as though the author was on a schedule and needed to produce something in a hurry. Boring, uninteresting characters, with loose ends galore. Very uneven. I'm quite disappointed, so much so, I'm not sure I'll even bother to read any other of his works that I have on my Kindle...it will be a long time if ever I do.
Bo
Except for the fact the switching back and forth between the various doctors made it difficult to follow from time to time ,I found this to be a very entertaining a tivity .The ending , however didn't seem to fit .
I have read almost all the books written by Noah Gordon and this book didn't fill the expectations that I expected of this excel
Not of the quality of the author. I have read almost all the books written by Noah Gordon and this book didn't fill the expectations that I expected of this excellent author. I highly recommend his other books like The Physician, The Shaman, The Last Jew and The Winemaker.
