The first of a 3-part series on the state of the media.  This week we discuss these topics:

  • Independent local newspapers are a thing of the past and local news is effectively absent in large portions of the country.  
  • Mainstream media present or fail to present news stories based on their marketing goals and the preconceptions of their target audience.
  • News stories are designed to make you feel part of a group that is fighting the horrible other side, not designed to inform you or present truthful information that you could use to make a decision in a democratic society.  
  • Online news is even more targeted to specific groups and the methods for sharing those stories - social media - is increasingly being censored by government-aligned groups to suppress news stories that contradict the narratives produced by the mainstream.
  • Those few courageous journalists who have brought us important stories of government corruption and illegality are being raided, jailed and prosecuted
