The debate that was not a debate at all

Listen Later

The first of three scheduled Presidential debates happened on Tuesday night, and it did not disappoint. We expected some fiery exchanges, deeply personal attacks, but there were a few surprises.

President Trump came out swinging immediately in the debate. He did not give anyone time to settle in, and it caught both Joe Biden and moderator Chris Wallace off guard. Even though he was rattled, Biden got in one good argument. The argument was about healthcare and the Affordable Care Act. Biden argued that Trump had not presented a plan.

Republicans have said they want to repeal and replace Obamacare, but have yet to produce a plan. That is the only strong point that Biden made the entire evening, and it was downhill from there for him.

Biden refused to answer questions all night. Not just small questions, but big ones. When asked if he supported stacking the courts, Biden refused to answer. When asked if he supported eliminating the filibuster, Biden refused to answer. Americans need to know those things.

What Biden did know were some interesting insults. He called Trump a clown, told him to shut up, and said he was the worst President in US history. It was clear that Biden was frustrated.

President Trump will get praise from his supporters as he went after Biden over the Green New Deal, Hunter's dealings in China and Ukraine, and the economic shutdowns that Biden prefers. He also went after Biden for his lack of support of law enforcement and refusal to say he supports law and order.

In the end, the debate did not tell us anything new. It did show us how easy it is for Joe Biden to become rattled by an aggressive personality. It also teaches us that President Trump is not going down without a fight. It really did not teach us anything new about either candidate.

I think that President Trump needed to be aggressive, but it will be interesting to see how moderate and independent voters feel about it. I do not believe he lost any voters, but he may not have helped his cause with voters in those categories. While Trump may not have helped in those areas, Biden didn't either. Biden failed to do anything but repeat the same Democrat lines of how bad President Trump is.

The real story may be coming out later this week as former FBI Director James Comey is set to testify. A newly declassified document tells that Comey knew about the Clinton campaign formulating the Russia hoax against Trump. It also said that the Obama administration knew, possibly implicating Obama and Biden.
