THE DEVIL’S DEVICES TO DECEIVE AND DESTROY -- II Corinthians 2:9-11

Listen Later

We saw last week that we who are saved have an enemy who is not of this world. His name is Satan. He is a fallen angel who was once known as Lucifer. He does not work alone. He has demon spirits (fallen angels) to do his bidding. And he is nefarious in his deeds. And Satan has a plan for every man, woman, boy, and girl in this world. That plan is to keep them from ever hearing the Gospel of Jesus Christ and to cause them to reject God’s salvation. There are many ways he does that. We have already seen some. Originally, Satan’s plan for us who are saved was the same as it was for the rest of the world, but you and I messed that up when we accepted Christ as Savior. So now his plan is to isolate you from God, from His Word, and from other believers because he knows that when believers are fellowshipping together, they are (supposed to be) building each other up in the Lord. That is why regular church attendance is so vital to your life as a child of God. As I said last week, if Satan will tempt and attack Jesus, don’t think for a moment that he will not do the same to a child of God. He may cause you to be dissatisfied with serving God at some point. You may not know why you are dissatisfied. You just think, “I don’t seem to get anything out of it,” or “The preacher preaches too long,” or “The music doesn’t satisfy me,” or the like. Sometimes you might just wake up in the morning with a bad attitude. I heard about one man that woke up one Sunday and just did not want to go to church. He said to his wife, “Give me one good reason I should go.” She said, “You’re the pastor. You have to go.” But you may wake up and be angry or upset. You don’t know why. You just feel “out of sorts.” Little things will bother you. Maybe the coffee is too weak . . . or too strong. Things just don’t seem to go right. Maybe it’s just a difficult day, and you certainly aren’t feeling the joy of the Lord. Guess who is behind it! Last week we heard about 3 ways in which Satan comes against people - oppression, obsession, and for the lost, possession. Vs. 11 of our text says, “Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.” We pointed out last week that the word “devices” refers to “that which is thought out; a purpose; a project; a plan.” It doesn’t matter if you have been saved 5 minutes, 5 years, or 50 years, Satan has a plan “B” for your life. (Remember, plan “A” was to cause you reject Jesus.) He is persistent, patient, very methodical, and he is willing to use every method and to work long and hard to accomplish his goal. This message sets forth some tactics Satan uses to ruin our testimony, to destroy our lives for Christ and that he will use against the unsaved to cause them to reject Christ and die lost. Remember: “We are not (and not to be) ignorant of his devices.”
