As Jesus’ disciples are sent into the world to continue His mission–dependence on the Person of Holy Spirit makes the decisive difference.
In todays sermon we considered that one of the ways we can tap into the “Spirit of truth,” who “dwells with you and will be in you” (vv 16-17) is to obey Paul’s exhortation to “let the word of Christ dwell in you richly” (Colossians 3:16) John Gill offers the following commentary on how we can do this:
As we begin a study which considers the Holy Spirit we must begin by acknowledging that there are many churches that avoid the subject completely or distort the subject severely. Do you agree with this assessment and why? What has been your experience with teaching on the Holy Spirit?
Understand the Text (20 min)1. What other promise does Jesus make to the disciples as they embark on mission? Read John 14:16-17.
If this is “another” Helper, who is the first helper?
The word “helper” can also be translated “advocate.” What does an advocate do?
Who is given the title of “advocate” in Scripture? Read John 14:16, 26; 15:26; 16:7; & 1 John 2:1).
2. What do we know about the Holy Spirit?
What are attributes of the Holy Spirit? Read Psalm 139:7-10; Luke 1:35-37; Isaiah 40:13-14; Hebrews 9:14).
What names does he have? (John 14:6, 17, & 26)
What does he do? Choose two passages and read: Romans 8:14-16; Romans 8:26; 2 Corinthians 1:21-22; Ephesians 1:13-14; John 16:7-8, 13-14; John 14:27; Galatians 5:22-23.
Where does Jesus say the Holy Spirit will live? Read John 14:17, 20, 23. How is this different than where the Holy Spirit has lived in the past? Read John 14:17b.
3. What does the Holy Spirit specifically do to help the disciples take the Gospel message forward? Read John 14:26. How does this help you understand the nature of the Bible? Read: 2 Timothy 3:16 and 2 Peter 1:20-21.
4. In this passage, which disciple asks a question, and what is his question? How does the promise of the Holy Spirit and where the Holy Spirit will live, answer this question?
5. Choose one of the following:
a.) For many, they believe the Holy Spirit is a force or an energy, but did you notice that Jesus refers to the Holy Spirit not as it but as He? Greek nouns are assigned a gender: Masculine. Feminine, Neuter, the Greek noun for Spirit is Neuter. However Jesus Christ breaks with grammatical convention and refers to the Spirit as He. Five times in our text the Spirit is referred to as He. Why? Because the Holy Spirit is a Person. Not just a force or an energy but a Person. What difference does it make to the way we relate to the Holy Spirit that He is a “Person” and not an “it”?
b.) In verse 26 Jesus says: “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” Notice the Spirit points us to Christ and not to Himself. To this end, Bruce Wared writes: “Though the Holy Spirit is God, equal in essence to the Father and the Son, yet his role is consistently to defer honor, to seek to bring about the glory of another.”
Doesn’t it seem today that may are seeking the glory fo the Spirit? Perhaps by chasing after gifts and experiences, of the Spirit? Is this wrong? If so why and How should we properly relate to the Spirit?
Application (10min)1. Does the indwelling of the Holy Spirit help you live the Christian life? In what ways has the Holy Spirit helped you in your Christian life?
2. (Optional) In your opinion what does it mean to “be filled with the Spirit” (Ephesians 5:18) and how can we receive His filling?
