The Difference the Holy Spirit Makes on Mission

Listen Later

Shaun Rossi // The Gospel of John

As Jesus’ disciples are sent into the world to continue His mission–dependence on the Person of Holy Spirit makes the decisive difference.

“15 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. 18 “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19 Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live.20 In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. 21Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.” 22 Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?” 23 Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. 24 Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Fathers who sent me. 25 “These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.””
— John 14:15-25

QUotes About the HOLY SPIRIT
“Without the Spirit we can neither love God nor keep His commandments.”
— Augustine
“Though the Holy Spirit is God, equal in essence to the Father and the Son, yet his role is consistently to defer honor, to seek to bring about the glory of another.”
— Bruce Ware
“The Christian’s life in all its aspects—intellectual and ethical, devotional and relational, upsurging in worship and outgoing in witness—is supernatural; only the Spirit can initiate and sustain it. So apart from him, not only will there be no lively believers and no lively congregations, there will be no believers and no congregations at all.”
— J.I. Packer
“Trying to do the Lord’s work in your own strength is the most confusing, exhausting, and tedious of all work. But when you are filled with the Holy Spirit, then the ministry of Jesus just flows out of you.”
— Corrie Ten Boom
Let the WOrd of Christ Dwell in YOu Richly

In todays sermon we considered that one of the ways we can tap into the “Spirit of truth,” who “dwells with you and will be in you” (vv 16-17) is to obey Paul’s exhortation to “let the word of Christ dwell in you richly(Colossians 3:16) John Gill offers the following commentary on how we can do this:

“His meaning is, that not one part of the Scripture only should be regarded and attended to but the whole of it, every truth and doctrine in it, even the whole counsel of God; which as it is to be declared and preached in its utmost compass, so all and every part of it is to be received in the love of it, and to be abode in and by; there is a fulness in the Scriptures, an abundance of truth in the Gospel, a large affluence of it; it is a rich treasure, an invaluable mine of precious truths; all which should have a place to their full extent, in both preacher and hearer: and that in all wisdom; or, “unto all wisdom”; in order to attain to all wisdom; not natural wisdom, which is not the design of the Scriptures, nor of the Gospel of Christ; but spiritual wisdom, or wisdom in spiritual things, in things relating to salvation; and which is, and may be arrived unto through attendance to the word of Christ, reading and hearing of it, meditating on it; and especially when accompanied with the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Christ, and which is to be desired and prayed for.”
— John Gill
SMALL GROUP STUDYIntroduction (5 min)

As we begin a study which considers the Holy Spirit we must begin by acknowledging that there are many churches that avoid the subject completely or distort the subject severely. Do you agree with this assessment and why? What has been your experience with teaching on the Holy Spirit?

Understand the Text (20 min)

1. What other promise does Jesus make to the disciples as they embark on mission? Read John 14:16-17.

  • If this is “another” Helper, who is the first helper?

  • The word “helper” can also be translated “advocate.” What does an advocate do?

  • Who is given the title of “advocate” in Scripture? Read John 14:16, 26; 15:26; 16:7; & 1 John 2:1).

2. What do we know about the Holy Spirit?

  • What are attributes of the Holy Spirit? Read Psalm 139:7-10; Luke 1:35-37; Isaiah 40:13-14; Hebrews 9:14).

  • What names does he have? (John 14:6, 17, & 26)

  • What does he do? Choose two passages and read: Romans 8:14-16; Romans 8:26; 2 Corinthians 1:21-22; Ephesians 1:13-14; John 16:7-8, 13-14; John 14:27; Galatians 5:22-23.

  • Where does Jesus say the Holy Spirit will live? Read John 14:17, 20, 23. How is this different than where the Holy Spirit has lived in the past? Read John 14:17b.

3. What does the Holy Spirit specifically do to help the disciples take the Gospel message forward? Read John 14:26. How does this help you understand the nature of the Bible? Read: 2 Timothy 3:16 and 2 Peter 1:20-21.

4. In this passage, which disciple asks a question, and what is his question? How does the promise of the Holy Spirit and where the Holy Spirit will live, answer this question?

5. Choose one of the following:

a.) For many, they believe the Holy Spirit is a force or an energy, but did you notice that Jesus refers to the Holy Spirit not as it but as He? Greek nouns are assigned a gender: Masculine. Feminine, Neuter,  the Greek noun for Spirit is Neuter. However Jesus Christ breaks with grammatical convention and refers to the Spirit as He. Five times in our text the Spirit is referred to as He. Why? Because the Holy Spirit is a Person. Not just a force or an energy but a Person. What difference does it make to the way we relate to the Holy Spirit that He is a “Person” and not an “it”?

b.) In verse 26 Jesus says: “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” Notice the Spirit points us to Christ and not to Himself. To this end, Bruce Wared writes: “Though the Holy Spirit is God, equal in essence to the Father and the Son, yet his role is consistently to defer honor, to seek to bring about the glory of another.”

Doesn’t it seem today that may are seeking the glory fo the Spirit? Perhaps by chasing after gifts and experiences, of the Spirit? Is this wrong? If so why and How should we properly relate to the Spirit?

Application (10min)

1. Does the indwelling of the Holy Spirit help you live the Christian life? In what ways has the Holy Spirit helped you in your Christian life?

2. (Optional) In your opinion what does it mean to “be filled with the Spirit” (Ephesians 5:18) and how can we receive His filling?
