What happened to the "Lost Colony" of Roanoke? Were they even lost? Colony Charter formed in 1585 by Sir Walter Raleigh sent colonists to Roanoke Island, Virginia in 1587. The colony was established on Roanoke Island that July. For a few weeks everything went well, but soon after on August 25, their leader, John White, realized they needed more supplies and sailed back to England to retrieve them. The colony and the colonists vanished, becoming the oldest "missing" case in Anglo-American history.
