On Christmas morning in 1945, a fire destroyed the home of George and Jennie Sodder in Fayetteville, West Virginia. The parents and four of their children escaped. Five other children were officially presumed dead, yet investigators reported finding no identifiable remains in the ruins.

The Sodders became convinced their children had survived. Questions about the fire, alleged sightings, unusual events surrounding the house, and later forensic examination kept that belief alive for decades. Some evidence supports a tragic house fire, while other details remain disputed or come from testimony that could never be independently verified.
