On May 8, 1927, French aviators Charles Nungesser and François Coli departed Paris aboard L'Oiseau Blanc, the White Bird. Their goal was to fly nonstop across the Atlantic to New York and claim the Orteig Prize. They were last reliably observed after crossing toward Ireland, then vanished.
An enormous international search found no confirmed wreckage. Later witness reports suggested the aircraft might have crossed the Atlantic and reached Newfoundland, perhaps even continuing toward Maine. Decades of expeditions have investigated those possibilities without producing definitive physical evidence.
