The early Church did believe that Jesus was Divine and realized that he was distinct from God the Father in some way. While there is no clear evidence that this belief was fully rationalized, as it is since the Church defined the Trinity and how Jesus was the Son after 7 major councils, they did believe in the truth that he was God.
