Publisher's Summary:
Set in the rugged region of the Midwest that gives the novel its title, The Driftless Area is the story of Pierre Hunter, a young bartender with unfailing optimism, a fondness for coin tricks, and an uncanny capacity for finding trouble.
When he falls in love with the mysterious and isolated Stella Rosmarin, Pierre becomes the central player in a revenge drama he must unravel and bring to its shocking conclusion. Along the way he will liberate $77,000 from a murderous thief, summon the resources that have eluded him all his life, and come to question the very meaning of chance and mortality. Nothing is as it seems in The Driftless Area - identities shift, violent secrets lie in wait, the future can cause the past, and love becomes a mission that can take you beyond this world.
In its tender, cool irony, The Driftless Area recalls the best of neonoir, and its cast of bona fide small-town eccentrics adrift in the American Midwest make for a clever and deeply pleasurable listen from one of our most beloved authors.

Great read from start to finish
Great read from start to finish. I recently saw the movie trailer for the upcoming VOD release of The Driftless Area and was somewhat captivated by it. Not everyone seems to be a fan but I decided to look the book up here on Amazon and purchased a second-hand hardcover copy and spread the reading out over 10 days to flip through on my spare time.
It is a short book but it's very entertaining. I don't read books very often but i'm very glad I looked into this and gave it a shot. I enjoyed the final chapter the most.
What a journey
This was such a great book. It really gets in your head and kind of makes you question all of your beliefs. I was drawn to it after watching the movie, which doesn't have much in common with the book. I recommend this book to those that like to get a little weird sometimes.
Amazing
From the beginning to the end, feels like Pierre's never left.
And did show me how important is people that you might run by ours lives are important.
A quick, enjoyable read set in the beautiful Driftless Region
I picked up this book because I'm a fan of the Driftless Region of the Upper Midwest. I wasn't quite sure what to expect with this book, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. The characters are quirky and interesting, and there are aspects of the book that are "out of this world" (otherworldly). I really like the fact that's it's a quick, fun read. I'm looking forward to seeing the feature film based on the book, too.
Did not drift off while reading
I had to read this novel for a lit class and I'm glad I did! Too often I have trouble finishing a class read but not in this case. It's a very easy read filled with extraordinary circumstances involving regular, average characters. Some students didn't enjoy the everyday people but I found them to be real and refreshing.
