Herbert Mullin, a paranoid schizophrenic, believed that sacrificing people would prevent earthquakes. He killed 13 people in California during the early 1970s. Mullin's delusions began in his teens and escalated after the death of a friend. He was released from hospitals multiple times due to not being a danger to himself or others when off medication. Mullin's killing spree lasted four months before he was arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment. He died in 2022.
