The Göckelesmaier, known by some affectionately as the “chicken tent,” is an institution in Stuttgart, Germany. Stuttgart is home to two enormous beer festivals, one in the spring and one in the fall. Of course, there have been no large public beer festivals with their iconic beer tents since 2019, so finally in 2022 we are celebrating the return of the beer fest! Since 1998, Karl Maier and his wife Daniella have led their family business. Our conversation, which was recorded in June 2021, covers the history of the Göckelesmaier, its evolution, and some of the unique and delicious aspects of German harvest festival culture. From the steep, granite cliffs of the Mosel River, Erni Loosen led the charge to restore Riesling's reputation as a world class varietal. More work remains, but Erni has succeeded at making Riesling appreciated again. His knowledge of wine history and the unique characteristics of the Mosel make this conversation one I will return often as I continue my studies.

Eugen Scalet, along with his wife, Anna Maria, revolutionized traditional Austrian aprés ski. This story begins in the 1980s, when the Scalets opened their slope-side sheep barn to thirsty skiers. Today, the Mooserwirt in St. Anton, Tirol is ground zero for one of the world's greatest parties. We discuss the history, unique musical formula, and new innovations that keep the Mooserwirt on top.
