Mat Johnson has always had a thing for unconventional homes, from a riverside shack to a heritage-listed salon. But his latest purchase might be his most unexpected yet: a 116-year-old church he bought over the phone while he was cutting hair.

Production designer Felicity Abbott returned to Australia after nine years working overseas to create the world of Netflix's My Brilliant Career, a new adaptation of Miles Franklin's iconic novel. 

In this episode of The Edit, Felicity tells Home Beautiful Editor-in-Chief Elle Lovelock how her team transformed historic South Australian properties, built entire homes from scratch and used everything from architecture and landscaping to furniture, colour and the smallest objects in a room to tell the story of the characters who live there.

Carla Grace has built her career painting the wildlife she grew up with in South Africa. She’s just landed back in Australia after a piece of hers went under the hammer at Sotheby's in New York for an astounding $40,000.
