The Africa EV Show

The Electric Highway Linking Nairobi to Kigali

Listen Later

Chinese electric vehicle (EV) technology is proving to be the easily available option for countries seeking to cushion their economies from expensive fuel imports, which have been exacerbated by the U.S.-Israel attacks on Iran.

While this has made lives more difficult, the upside is that, for many fuel-importing countries, it's been a silver lining, as they're now pivoting to electrons for their mobility. In Kenya, fuel prices are climbing, which is leading to increased logistics costs, pushing transport operators to seek alternatives that make financial sense. One solution attracting growing attention is electric trucking.

In this episode, I sit down with John Msingo, the Kenya Vehicle Expansion Specialist at electric mobility company Kabisa, to explore one of the country's most talked-about electric trucks. We discuss why African mobility companies are partnering with Chinese manufacturers, the economics of operating an electric truck, charging infrastructure along the Nairobi-Mombasa corridor, maintenance costs, range, performance, and what the future of heavy-duty electric transport could look like in East Africa.
