Elisa Lam arrives at the Cecil Hotel on January 28, 2013. She knows nothing about the city and, of course, nothing about Skid Row. It is a poor and dangerous neighborhood in which she has planned to stay for four days. Despite the luxurious appearance of the hotel lobby, the rooms are quite dirty and poorly maintained. She stays in room 506 and shares toilets and showers with other residents on the floor. But she adapts. After all, she's not there to sleep all day! Everything seems fine. At least, that's what she tells her parents when she calls them every day...
