The ELN in Colombia: Past, Present and Future

Listen Later

The ELN, or National Liberation Army in English, are a left-wing armed group from Colombia who were founded in the early 1960s while the country was coming out of a ten-year civil war known as La Violencia.

The group has been involved since then in what’s known as the Colombian Conflict, which is an asymmetric conflict between the Government, right-wing paramilitary groups, left-wing armed groups, and other organised crime actors, all vying to increase their influence in the areas they control, in order to impose their ideologies, but primarily as a means to conduct their illicit activities.

In the latest Intelligence Fusion podcast, our Senior Regional Analyst for the America, Vincent Fevrier, gives us a brief history lesson on the guerrilla group, analyses their activity throughout 2019 and uses it as a basis to provide his outlook on the ELN in Colombia in 2020.
