12/31/1862: first "WatchNight"- where enslaved people waited for EP to go into effect at struck of midnight to become freed men & women
1/01/1863: Emancipation Proclamation went into effect
6/19/1865: Juneteenth (federal order read by Union army general Gordon Granger in Galveston, proclaiming that all slaves in Texas were free)
