In which two weary English ladies arrive at a mysterious Italian station beneath a sky heavy with rain, enduring a bewildering, shadowy journey through twisting roads and flower-scented paths guided by the spirited Beppo and later the vigilant gardener Domenico. At last they reach the ancient, lantern-lit gates of San Salvatore, their long journey culminating in a tender moment of friendship born from shared endurance and hopeful anticipation.
