Definition of a dry fire: When a bow is dry fired (released without an arrow), the stored energy has nowhere to go except back into the bow itself, causing significant damage as the sudden force of the release can stress the bow's components beyond their design limits; essentially, it can severely damage the bow and render it unusable.
