The Enemy Inside

November 9, 2025 – The Enemy Inside – Colossians 3:5-6, 10; Luke 12:1

Colossians 3:5-6, 10 advises Christians to “put to death” earthly, sinful desires like sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires, and greed, which are considered idolatry, because God’s wrath is against them. The passage calls for putting off the “old self” with its practices and putting on the “new self,” which is renewed in knowledge after the image of the Creator. Luke 12:1 is a separate verse that describes Jesus warning his disciples to “beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy”.

Colossians 3:5-6, 10 summary

  • Mortal sin: The passage instructs believers to “put to death” earthly desires such as sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires, and greed. These are referred to as the “old self” and are equated with idolatry, leading to God’s wrath.
  • New self: This is contrasted with putting on the “new self,” which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its Creator.
  • New life: It implies a need for a radical change, getting rid of sinful habits and embracing a new identity rooted in Christ.
  • Luke 12:1 summary

    • Warning about hypocrisy: This verse contains a separate warning from Jesus to his followers to be wary of the “leaven of the Pharisees,” which he clarifies is hypocrisy.
    • Focus on internal sincerity: The warning suggests that the external religious practices of the Pharisees were not backed by genuine, internal sincerity, and that the disciples should guard against a similar, internal fakeness.
    • Colossians 3:5-6, 10; Luke 12:1

Colossians 3:5-10 – New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition

Put to death, therefore, whatever in you is earthly: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed (which is idolatry). On account of these the wrath of God is coming on those who are disobedient.[a] These are the ways you also once followed, when you were living that life.[b] But now you must get rid of all such things: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive[c] language from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have stripped off the old self with its practices 10 and have clothed yourselves with the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge according to the image of its creator.

      A Warning against Hypocrisy

12 Meanwhile, when the crowd had gathered by the thousands, so that they trampled on one another, he began to speak first to his disciples, “Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees, that is, their hypocrisy.
