In this talk Barry takes up the first case of The Transmission of Light (Denkoroku) by Keizan Jokin, a third generation successor of Dogen's. The first case presents the Buddha's awakening. What is the nature of the Buddha's sitting that led to his enlightenment? What models of practice does this speak to? What did the Buddha mean when he said "I and all beings on Earth attain enlightenment at the same time." Is enlightenment reducible to an individual's transformation of consciousness? Is enlightenment even an individual experience? What did the Buddha see when he saw that star?
