Listen Later

On this episode, we discuss the thirty-fourth Best Picture Winner: “WEST SIDE STORY.”

"West Side Story" is set in an Upper West Side blue-collar neighborhood in New York City in the mid 1950s. The musical explores the rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, two teenage street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds. The members of the Sharks, from Puerto Rico, are taunted by the Jets, a white gang. The young protagonist, Tony (a former member of the Jets and best friend of the gang's leader, Riff) falls in love with Maria, the sister of Bernardo, the leader of the Sharks. Directed by Jerome Robbins & Robert Wise, the film stars Natalie Wood as Maria, Richard Beymer as Tony, Russ Tamblyn as Riff, Rita Moreno as Anita, and George Chakiris as Bernardo.

Here on The Envelope, we discuss & review every Best Picture Winner in the Academy Awards History.
