The Envelope – Ep. #36 – Tom Jones

Listen Later

On this episode, we discuss the thirty-sixth Best Picture Winner: “TOM JONES.”

"Tom Jones" is a British adventure-comedy adaptation of Henry Fielding's classic novel "The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling."  Tom Jones, a bastard foundling raised by the kindly Squire Allworthy, loves the beautiful Sophie Western, but cannot marry her due to the difference in their stations. When the villainous Blifil tricks the squire into casting Tom out of his household, the young man goes forth into the world on a series of high-spirited adventures, including heroic sword-fights, mistaken identities, good deeds and lusty women.  Directed by Tony Richardson, the film stars Albert Finney as Tom Jones, George Devine as Squire Allworthy, Susannah York as Sophie Western, and David Warner as Blifil.

Here on The Envelope, we discuss & review every Best Picture Winner in the Academy Awards History.
