Superman is high in the public consciousness today, so we’re taking a step back and looking at the movie series that many still site as the quintessential version of the character. In this episode we discuss all four of the Superman movies that starred Christopher Reeve as well as Superman Returns, a movie intended to be a sequel to those earlier films. We talk about Reeves in the roles of both Clark Kent and Superman. We discuss his co-stars from each film as well as how they either added to or detracted from the movies. We also get into the various film plots and how we feel that they showcased the character. Before we wrap up we explain what’s in each of the versions of the first two films and we debate the merits of Superman Returns. We also give our rankings for these movies.

This week, our five-minute-controversy asks if we agree with James Gunn that unfinished scripts are the reason for the decrease in movie attendance by the public.

Flopcast episode 688! We’re using our 1988 episode to finally wrap up our Backs of Life series, in which we review every backdoor pilot episode of classic 80s sitcom The Facts of Life. And this final two-part backdoor pilot from April 1988 is actually the end of the whole show! (Farewell, Tootie…) We start with a fleeting glimpse of the regular cast (which by this point also includes Australian moppet Pippa), but soon we’re solidly in backdoor pilot territory. Eastland, the girls’ old school, is in danger of closing, so Blair buys the place, and welcomes boys to enroll as well as girls. Then we see a whole new crop of young Eastland students, including some future stars: Juliette Lewis, Mayim Bialik, and Seth Green! Did this backdoor pilot lead to another beloved long-running series? Of course not. But does it end with the girls meeting a giant chicken? Well, kids, sometimes the world really seems to be living up to our dreams.

LIVE AID

July 13 is the 40th Anniversary of LIVE AID, one of the greatest rock festivals of all time! We each share our memories of watching it live on the day, the excitement that surrounded the event, and some of the stories behind bands that didn’t appear for various reasons. Each of us has picked our five favorite performances / bands / moments to talk about at length, and we mention some of the lowlights as well (and yes, there were a few). Some of the acts that get a mention are Duran Duran, Black Sabbath, Madonna, Run DMC, Elton John, the Who, Simple Minds, Judas Priest, Tom Petty, the Pretenders, and many others. And of course, it’s virtually impossible to have any discussion about Live Aid without mentioning Queen, Bowie, and U2. Hope you’ll join us for a fun discussion!
