Ephesians 2:8-9
Paul expounds on the very essence of the gospel in these verses; the fundamental reality of salvation by faith alone. The study of Greek grammar in verse eight shows us that Paul does not say that faith itself is a gift from God, but that salvation is a gift. Faith is what we exercise. We also consider the dangers of legalism and how it tends to substitute a work-oriented salvation as opposed to a grace salvation.

Ephesians 2:6-8We look at the third of God's awesome actions that changed our eternal destiny; we are seated with Him in heavenly places as princes and princesses, we are victors having dominion, and we are permanent citizens of heaven. Paul tells us that God's absolutely astonishing purpose in redeeming us is to forever show us the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. We look at five stunning blessings for us in "the ages to come."

Ephesians 2:4-6As Paul instructs us about redemption, we see God's great heart for us in three main points: He is rich in mercy, He loved us with His great love, and He accomplished salvation by the work of His grace. We also look at the first two of three awesome actions which the Lord accomplished in Christ alone, that changed our eternal destiny: He made us alive together with Him and He raised us up with Him.

Ephesians 2:1-3Paul instructs us on the bad news of our pre-Christ existence. We were born spiritually dead due to the imputation of the sin nature all the way back to the sin of Adam. Three types of spiritual slavery followed that condition. First, we walked according to the sinful course of this world. Second, we lived ungodly lives under the power of Satan, called here "the prince of the power of the air." And, third, We were enslaved by all manner of fleshly lusts.

Ephesians 1:19-23Paul addresses the third of his three essential purposes of his prayer for the Ephesians: the surpassing greatness of His power. This includes the resurrection of Christ, His authority over all things, and His headship over the church. Paul's instruction about Jesus' authority leads us to an irrefutable view on the power, dominion, and deity of Christ. We see nine aspects of what is important to the Lord Jesus and therefore ought to be important to us.

Ephesians 1:18-19Paul tells us the purpose of his prayer for the Ephesians church including what is the hope of God's calling and what are the riches of the glory of the inheritance in the saints. The overall purpose of Pauls' instruction here is simply for his readers to have the knowledge of God.

Ephesians 1:15-17Paul had heard of the love of the Ephesians for all the saints. He commends them for this. We look at the implications of Christian love and how that love ought to motivate us to love one another as well as what that love should keep us away from. He also begins a magnificent intercessory prayer for the Ephesian believers in terms of wisdom, revelation, and the knowledge of God.

Ephesians 1:11-14Paul begins to address the matter of the inclusion of the gentiles into God's kingdom, a big theme in Ephesians. We also look at the three-fold work of the Holy Spirit in believers; He is the Holy Spirit of promise, in Him we are sealed, and He is given as the pledge of our inheritance. We see that redemption in three different ways is to "the praise of His glory." The implications of this are profound.

Ephesians 1:11-14

We see more of what the summing up of all things in Christ means as it reflects God's sovereignty. Plus we look at the first of four themes of our salvation in Christ, that is, our inheritance. It is imperishable, undefiled, unfading, and reserved in heaven

Ephesians 1:10

God sovereignly superintends all circumstances including those regarding Christ's redemption of humanity. We see Old Testament examples of how God accomplished what He desires in spite of human obstacles and unbelief. The plans and purposes of God will be perfectly fulfilled in His time yet He does eliminate or deny human free-will. All things in this world are summed up in Christ Jesus.
