The Fall of Eric Swalwell Isn't Over & Attacking and Criminalizing Journalists
Rep. Eric Swalwell went from being the leading candidate to be the next Governor of California to dropping out of the race and resigning from Congress in less than seven days. What happened? The rumors of misconduct and sexual harassment of staff went from rumors to allegations of sexual assault from a former staffer last Friday. (Which he denied.) That was followed by other women coming forward with similar claims over the weekend, claims ranging from inappropriate pictures and messages sent via Snapchat to the alleged use of "date-rape" drugs, and then topped off with an early-week press conference by yet another accuser.
On April 11th, Savanah Hernandez, a journalist working with Turning Point USA, was attempting to film some B-Roll footage when anti-ICE protestors recognized her, a crowd gathered, Paige Ostroushko, a University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point soccer player and psychology major, started blowing a loud whistle directly into her ear (which is assalt at that point, by the letter of the law) and after a brief moment Hernandez made an effort to remove herself from the situation. As Hernandez attempted to leave, some contact was made between Savanah and Paige, which ignited a scuffle between the two, and then Savanah was attacked by Paige's mother and brutally by Paige's father. (Since then, the Ostroushkos have been telling anyone who will listen that they are not violent and that they are the victims. I think the video tells a different story.)
California Democrats, tired of having to deal with massive fraud occurring under their collective noses, are finally taking action. There is an effort to move forward with AB 2624, also known as the "Privacy for Immigration Support Services Providers Act," but better known as the "Stop Nick Shirley Act." That's right: rather than taking steps to end the fraud and waste of taxpayer money, they want to stop independent journalists from uncovering it.
