It’s finally official, today kicked off the countdown to Canada's 43rd general election. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made the announcement on Wednesday in Ottawa shortly after a meeting with Governor General Julie Payette at Rideau Hall.

Host Tamara Khandaker hands off the first of our weekly election specials to co-host Amanda Connolly from Global’s Parliamentary bureau. Today Amanada’s talking to bureau chief Mercedes Stephenson, who was on the scene at Rideau Hall, and David Akin, Global’s chief political correspondent. They talk about what voters should expect in terms of tone and the level of attacks this campaign, as well as what the political calculation could be for calling the election now.
