The Fifth Place at the Barnes Table
The story is told from the perspective of a small-town cop, Officer Brims, in rural Iowa, investigating the disappearance of the Barnes family. Upon entering their home, he discovers the entire family dead at their dinner table, apparently victims of a dark ritual, evidenced by a pentagram carved into the ceiling and an open journal.
The journal reveals the parents’ attempt to resurrect a lost child, which required a sacrificial offering and resulted in the manifestation of a grotesque, massive entity now feeding in the dining room. A violent confrontation ensues, forcing backup to arrive and subdue and destroy the creature in a shootout that destroys much of the house.
The narrative concludes with an immediate and ruthless cover-up: authorities fabricate a gas leak story and burn the Barnes residence to the ground, erasing all evidence of the supernatural event.
