The Film Magnolia and the songs of Aimee Mann

Listen Later

Released in 1999, the film Magnolia was film written, directed and co-produced by Paul Thomas Anderson. The movie is an epic mosaic of interrelated characters in search of happiness, forgiveness and meaning in the San Fernando Valley. The script was inspired by the music of Aimee Mann, who contributed several songs to its soundtrack.

Anderson met Aimee Mann in 1996 when he asked her husband, Michael Penn, to write the score and songs for his film, Hard Eight. Mann's songs had been featured on soundtracks before but only incidentally. Anderson encouraged her to write songs for the film by sending her a copy of the script.

The soundtrack album, released on Reprise Records, features Mann's songs, as well as a section of Jon Brion's score together with tracks by Supertramp and Gabrielle. Reprise released a full score album in 2000.

In this episode I am in discussion with Dr. Andrew Webber.
